TRR 318 – Constructing Explainability
The Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio 318 “Constructing Explainability” investigates how people can be actively involved in the processes by which algorithmic decisions are explained. Rather than treating explanations as something delivered to passive recipients, the centre develops the foundations of co-constructive explanation, in which explainer and explainee shape understanding together — so that users can make informed decisions and participate critically in a digital society.
Around 75 researchers from linguistics, psychology, media studies, sociology, economics, computer science, and philosophy work together at Paderborn University and Bielefeld University across three research areas: explanation processes, explaining as a social practice, and the representation and computation of explanations.
